When I was stationed in S. Korea in 88-89 I made several excursions to the pagodas and a few of these type of buildings. The joinery is very impressive. Not many I saw were freshly painted in the south end of the peninsula where I was. Up north some were brightly painted. I still remember those trips well.

Not pass? Only because American building inspectors don't understand wood timbers with wood joinery. That's not the schooling they got. Buildings like this will undoubtedly outlast U.S. architectural wood construction. Maybe even concrete and rebar.

I think our "code" is a joke personally. Most of the houses that I have lived in over the last 60 plus years would never pass today's code, from my parents ranch house to the house I have lived in for 35 years and built 80 years ago, but all of those houses are not only still standing, but will be here for another 100 years ...
