New Mark 5 Owner
Just acquired a Mark 5, looks like 1959 Greenie. I've cleaned it up and waxed the tubes though they are not able to look like typical shiny chrome.
I've included many pictures but curios to know if this is all standard Mark 5 or any obvious upgrades. Looks like maybe an extension table that isn't in the original manual (I downloaded the manual).
The headstock does move freely. I've turned it on and it appears to work but have not taken the pulley cover off, oiled it, etc.
I'm not crazy about the extension cord mod and will likely remove it and wire a different cord without the extra outlets. Thoughts?
The is also a piece of tape on the headstock that is visible in the pictures, any ideas what that might be fore?
The drill press spindle (not sure the accurate part name) in the accessory pictures is rusty, looks like surface rust. Haven't tried to open it.
The blade and arbor has some rust, not sure if blade is original, or if the rust can be removed from the arbor. Assume 9 inch blades are readily available.
There is a "plug" in the accessory picture that I can't identify as well as 2 plugs that may just have snapped into extension tubes openings during shipment, not sure.
There is a large thin metal piece in the accessory picture that I can't identify either, maybe for shaping.
Any thought, ideas, guidance would be appreciated.
thanks!

What a great find! I'd loose the extension cord multi plug.. I run mine on a dedicated circuit. That looks like a wide extension table from a newer mark v.welcome to the forum!

Nice find! I wish that my Greenie had been in that good of shape when I bought it. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished pics.

Re: New Mark 5 Owner
Why is it so many of these used machines are found with a saw blade mounted without the guard mounted?
Anyway, in your accessories pic, there are two plastic pieces that mount to the front and rear of the lower saw guard with plastic thumb screws (at least they were plastic on my 1980's era Mark V model 500. As for the thin metal piece, are you talking about the piece in the upper left laying next to the lower saw guard? If so, I don't recognize it, but I'm sure someone will chime in with the answer. Have fun with it!

Re: New Mark 5 Owner
Those plugs should fit into a hole on your belt cover. From the last picture you posted, it looks like there is already a plug in there. Just below the sprayer / jointer shaft

Welcome to the funny farm/disease!! That is one clean greenie, and I think one of the better SS made minus the Gilmer belt. You will get all the help you need here, and they are a very easy/simple machine to rebuild/maintain!!
On the maintenance forum you can access so much, and the there is this knowledgeable ghost called JPG that is a some what of an engineer, and by no way an English major, with his lack of vowels, but you can trust with your first born!!

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them.

Re: New Mark 5 Owner
Thanks for the replies. Tried to remove the blade today with no success, so before I break something I thought I'd ask.
I loosened and removed the set screw from the arbor and also the larger aluminum collar but could not get the arbor to slide off. I tried a little force with a hammer and block but it didn't move so I stopped before I broke something. Ideas?

Pentrating oil. Use WD40 (not my fav but easier) PB Blaster, half automatic trans fluid and half acetone works well, and mix up only what you need as the acetone flashes off quick. Let it soak and you will get it off.Max42 wrote:Thanks for the replies. Tried to remove the blade today with no success, so before I break something I thought I'd ask.

How long has it been setting?

Re: New Mark 5 Owner
This is an all too frequent issue.
Check out something posted previously for some more detail http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/viewt ... 61#p189061
Also, use the 50/50 acetone/atf mix and put it in the hole, followed by the allen screw to force it in.
If headstock can be safely powered up and is working ok, put the table over the saw blade, locking the headstock and the carriage and table in place, with saw guards installed, and let it spin a while if speed is on saw or lower. Do not move the speed dial unless you are spinning it by hand or it is under power as belts and pulleys inside must be moving to adjust speed dial.
The vibration, inertia, and hydraulic pressure of the set screw forcing in the mixture will distribute the liquid help loosen it up. In about 5 minutes, power it down, and see if it will move any.
If it doesn't yet, do it again and let it sit overnight. It should come off, but realize it is close fitting by design and often will create a 'pop' sound as it breaks the suction and that's when everything is normal.
