First off Charlese thanks for the very interesting articles, 2nd a buddy of mine has an Ash tree, for years the leaves turn a very nice yellow and just sit there, no matter wind, or rain, then one day, usually a still one, after a frosty night, but not the first one, they drop like snow flakes all in one day, I have noticed that on other Ash trees.
Here since my original post and the night with no frost, not many dropped off the maples, even though we have had strong winds for the last 24 hours with gust up to 45mph, because the temp has been a constant 45-50*
