I May Have a Problem

In the last 3 months I have acquired 2 Mark V 510s, a Mark 5, 1 complete Mark VII (original), and a Mark VII missing all of the gearing and spindles (though it does have a good speed control), 2 band saws (with two modern aluminum tables, and 1 cast iron table), a jointer, an old style pipe jigsaw, dust collection unit, and a whole bunch of assorted arbors and other accessories. I have less than $1000 invested in all of it. I think I need to get my units set up and stop gathering. So the plan is to set one of the 510s set up for lathe and table saw. Not sure how to set up the other Mark Vs, thinking one will be shorty for band saw, jig saw, jointer and sanding, while the other for drill press. Any suggestions and/or intervention to keep me off craigslist will be appreciated.

First welcome and this is the right place. Cast iron table, I have limited experience but dont know of any cast iron on the SS other then the jointer and maybe BS.
I am not familiar with all of yours, but I think you have a good plan, for making a shorty with your SPTs and a DP from those 2.

I keep my jointer mounted on the 520 that I use for a table saw. It's a good combo, as you tend to use them in tandem, and they like to run at the same speed setting. Next, I'd dedicate one as a drill press machine, and I'd keep a bandsaw set up on one. You might want to use a 510 as a sanding station, as the lower guard offers pretty good dust collection. The jigsaw comes in handy sometimes, but I don't use mine a lot, so it could probably be swapped on as needed without much impact on overall setup times.

My recommendation is to first set up your 510 as you have planned. Then do nothing with the others until you have used your 510, on a project, in all of it's configurations. After some experience with your 510 you will find what you should do with the other stuff.

In other words, Don't over plan!!!!

Who knows? Your 510 may need a part or two from one of the others.

LOL you sound like me. Get the deals, get the deals, get the deals!!! I admit I have put in around $1750 though. Got a 520, a 500 (now dedicated drill press), Pro Planer, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, strip sander, bandsaw (upgraded table and fence), scroll saw (not the jigsaw), biscuit cutter, and tons of small trinkets. Sometimes you just can't pass up on those deals.

So if you are like me, you now have a ton of crap (for lack of a better word)... I started here http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/begin ... 16336.html and organized what I had and got to know my shopsmith fairly well, including the horizontal boring process.

Then I continued with a storage shelf for the additional add-on tools.

And then I started to understand how to set everything up, including making my dedicated drill press. So like Charlese stated... get some experience with your 510 then decide how you want it all set up.

Wow. I wish I could find all that stuff for under $1K - right now, CL in my area has one 520 for $1,000, one 510 for $1,500, a couple of 500s for $750 and $900, (none with band saws or jointers) and a bunch of ERs that look like they've been in a barn for the last 50 years.

Same here. Notice how they don't sell. Be patient and stalk Craigslist and get the deals before they sell.

I know I have a problem. I have an old 10E with a 3/4hp at a consignment place, a 10ER in the basement as a drill press, a Greenie with a 1-1/8 motor in the garage, a 510 that I just bought yesterday that came with attachments:multiple shapers, mortisers, a bandsaw, 6" belt sander, old jig saw and various small bits. I still need to pick up-it was only $75 so I'll use it for parts-only has a drill chuck.

My goal is to get it down to the 10er in the basement, the 510 and a shorty to use as a sanding station.

Anybody want a bandsaw for cheap in the Denver area? I don't need it since I've got a stand-alone. It needs tires.

As others have stated, Set the one machine up and use it for a while. You will then be able to figure what is needed and used the most. Build out from there!
