New owner saw blades

Post by Thleone »

Do I have to use only SS blades or can I change arbor so I can use standard blades?

Shopsmith sells arbors for blades with standard 5/8" bores. See this page for details. There are two variants, so be sure to get the right one for your machine.

The current Shopsmith blades are excellent, by the way.

Yes they are. SS sells arbors for after makert saw blades with a 5/8" bore. However, the arbor is a different length for the model 500 and the later models 505,510,520. Be aware that sellers on eBay and Craigslist don't always specify and may not know the difference. laissez faire!!!

Bandsaw tire wArehouse (via eBay) offers USA-made 5/8 arbors specifically for your Mark V model. They are quite a bit more than from SS (about $55) but they have them in stock. Mine arrived in just a couple of days. I tried to order from SS but they were on back order and after SS extended the promise date for the third time I cancelled the order and paid more. The arbor fit like a glove and allowed me to start sawing. Maybe SS has them back in stock now. Always a good thing to support the company when you can.
