10ER Quill Spring

Hi all, OK, so I scored another 10ER, for $100! It has no bench, and the previous owner was 'restoring' it. this is how come the quill spring is unattached at one end (the inside), and me with no idea how to get it attached and, presumably, spring. Oh, he also put the other end shaft (with the spline inside) in backwards, but I didn't want to point that out at the time. It also has a good set of knives and a live center (which I was about to spend other money on!).

So, anybody got any pictures or a video essay on how to get teh spring attached? I think I have figured out how everything else goes back, and the quill spline shafts need serious cleaning, and maybe a bit of scraping to smooth out what looks like a metal-to-metal incident in its past.

This task has caused many to lose their religion. I use a method that if done correctly not only makes reattachment trivial, but also makes it automatic should it ever come off again.

The critical detail is to 'form' the spring so that the keyhole end naturally rests at a position near the center of the housing. The end has a radius roughly equal to the radius of the shaft. The spring radius gradually increases as it gets further from the end.

When the spring is detached from the pin and the shaft is rotated in the quill advance direction, the pin will ride on the spring until the keyhole is reached and snap into the large hole end. Further rotation (and tension) will pull the pin into the narrow slot of the keyhole.
