Pro planer questions

Post by richardrouse »

Found a proplaner for 150 on craigslist. I'm going to check it out tomorrow.

Are there any areas I need to look at specifically before forking over the cash?

Make sure the feed motor and controller work. If they do, buy it quickly!

Cool! But remember, if there are no pics, it didn't happen. :D

You just might, however, have earned the Top Thief award for Pro Planer deals. I paid $225 for mine, with casters and an extra set of blades. And I thought that was a steal. :o

No No No. I went to get a SS Power Stand with jointer that I didn't need (jointer) for $150. When I got there the guy rolled out a Pro Planer and said would you be interested in this. I already had one but I said how much? He said $100 since you are buying the power stand.  It was beautiful. Obviously not new but perfect. I didn't need it so I called a buddy ( not a SS guy but he has seen/used mine) and he said sure. I had to drive 5 miles to the credit union to get another $100 cash but that was fine.

That planer looked as good as mine that I bought new 6 or 7 years earlier. We took the blades out and sharpened them with the SS jig and did a little lube and good to go.

Well, shoot. Now you've done gone and stolen the Top Thief award (Pro Planer category) from richardrouse! ;) :D

It's amazing what deals pop up from time to time. Early on in my Shopsmith-acquisition spree, I eagerly paid the CL asking price for a Magna jigsaw on a Power Stand. $55, that price was. Once the dust was cleaned off, both the jigsaw and the Power Stand were pristine. The seller even mailed me the original manuals a couple months later, when he chanced upon them.

More recently, I saw a Ringmaster for SS listed on CL for $20, and managed to be the first local caller. The seller was such a straightup guy that after chatting for an hour or so, I told him it was way underpriced, and gave him an extra $20 just to assuage my guilt!

Truer words are rarely spoken.

I haven't had much chance to take it apart yet. I need to address the rust issue on the indeed and outfeed table. The blades also need to be sharpened. There are a few nicks that are aparent when I spin the cutter head.

Also, the rubber on the outdeed roller looks a little rough. It takes a board just fine, but I'm thinking that might need to be replaced.

All in all, for 150.. I'm happy. This is a darn solid feeling tool. In my quest for a planer I did check out the options at Lowes and home depot and just thought they seemed far too flimsy.

That will clean up nicely!!!!

What size motor?

Outfeed roller replace fer sure.

If infeed roller is also rubber, replace it also.

But then you probably have already concluded that. ;)
