Well I got there email sale alert on them and as I was reading the description I was already thinking about this new thread to see how anyone who has one likes it. Then I got to the next page with the price. WOW to say the least!!!!
Tell me it is worth it.

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them.

You can buy a lot of keys for $130
Now I have an ER as a dedicated DP and the key is hung on a string from the what ever, and a rare earth magnet keeps it out of harms way. But I am super anal retentive so I do have to shoot the normal personalities some slack, when I remember to.

There are two other ++.
Up to 5/8".
Down to 1/32"(not sure it is stout enough for that
I just do not have faith in keyless chucks. Perhaps I have never had my hands on a good one(Dewalt comes close). I hate boogered shanks.

Agreed. I too am repulsed by shanked boogers.JPG wrote: I just do not have faith in keyless chucks. Perhaps I have never had my hands on a good one(Dewalt comes close). I hate boogered shanks.
I guess that's why it took me awhile to get used to, and confident in, the new keyless guy. There's till that wee little bit of extra torque goes into changing bit or item, but it's no longer a "concern" but rather just another checklist item (mental).
As for the chuck in general, I am completely pleased and more, and don't even think about using the other older one (which is now in the back of the cabinet out of the way). The capacities 'thing' is enough to get my vote. Smallest to largest all feel equally at home.
Re: SS keyless chuck
Besides my above comments mine has done everything I could ask and I like it a lot. No messed up shanks yet.
Re: SS keyless chuck
I bought one earlier this year and returned it. The runout measured over 10 thousands, its big and heavy with no redeeming values as far as I am concerned. One of the worst things Shopsmith has come up with.
Re: SS keyless chuck
Wow. 10 thou is absolutely unacceptable, imho. Were you able to confirm the problem was actually the chuck? Seems to me one thou would be a forgivable maximum (and even that would annoy me).sehast wrote:I bought one earlier this year and returned it. I don't suppose SS followed up your return with a report on what was wrong? (Or would they employ a marketing strategy such as "if we are verrry quiet maybe he will buy another one?)
Re: SS keyless chuck
Its a long story. I called to complain and Shopsmith acted like runout didn't matter. I had to return it at my expense and then they would look at it to see if it was defective. I sent it back USPS and the postal service lost the package. After many weeks of haggling the postal service did pay me back the $130 but I was out the shipping expenses both ways (about $25 total). Not a great experience.keakap wrote:Wow. 10 thou is absolutely unacceptable, imho. Were you able to confirm the problem was actually the chuck?
