BORA Clamping guildes

Post by dannyshamoon »

So I'm thinking that using a clamping saw guild would be easier than the old method of a straight edge and trying to adjust both ends and using a bar clamp to secure it. I've been looking at the BORA system with the saw guild plate, but the reviews are mixed about how well they fit the saw and how hard the clamp handle is to release. Has anybody use them? I saw a video on to make make your own guild with a 2 pieces of plywood, but I'm space limited so a 8 foot guild would be hard to store.
Any ideas or input???
Thanks

Sorry no experience with that brand.

I have and use a version of these:

And have been happy with them. I have a longer version that I picked up which allows the cutting of 8' plywood, I think it is 113". So they do take up space but maybe not as much as if you made your own???

I'd also look for sales as the prices can be a lot lower. These are sold under several names but appear to be the same clamps so shopping around is also well worth your while.

I made my own by screwing a piece of T track to an 8' length of 1/2" Baltic Birch. Then bolted the matching insert to the sole of my saw. Works like a charm. Never a need to use the Shopsmith for trimming to size.
Cost was less than $50. But, you'e correct, Ed. It does take more space than those you linked to.

Thanks for the reply. I've seen these and I was thinking the BORA with the saw plate would keep me straight and a fixed distance for the saw blade to calculate.

Gene..Thanks for the reply. I guess in the end I just wanted something easier to store than an 8 ft bar. As the BORA bar breaks into 2 50" segments.
Thanks

That implies a 'joint'. If not sturdy enough, a source of non-linearity.

I understand that possibility. I just (I guess) an easier way to break down a 4x8 sheet of plywood by myself. I've learned that I can use a 2" thick 4x8 sheet of ridge insulation to make the cutting easier so that I want to worry about having a stand or someone to ho;d the cut from falling or jamming the saw at the last couple of inches. Decisions decisions decisions

Not sure of the price comparison but have you looked at the Shopsmith true track system?

I bought a cheap one a couple decades ago from the big box, an as JPG pointed out, mine was 2 piece with about a 12" internal connector that 4 screws held it place, I had side play if I was not careful about not exerting to much side force against it.

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them. :)

Ed.... Yes I did and I like it very much, except for the $$$ price. The BORA system can be had for $100, where the Tru Track is $270. Just out of my range currently. :(
