New Toy: Record 52D Vise

Post by algale »

I recently picked this up off craigslist. My first "real" vise and to be incorporated into a new bench in 2016.

I got a new toy too. Not sure just what to do with it yet but I'll keep working on that.

Aren't toys fun! That looks like a Record as well. Does it have the model number stamped on it?

The 52D I bought is I think the smallest size, and has 7 inch jaws. There's a 52&1/2 which I think has 9 inch jaws and finally a 53 which has 10 inch jaws.

As to where to put it, I've seen them set up both as face and end vises with wood jaws.

Can't wait to see your bench! That is one solid-looking vise.

The close up photo and lack of scale makes it look like a brute. The jaws are only 7" across.

Al, it's a 53. A woodworking school changed out all their vises and was giving these away! I got the last one. I could barely drag it out to my car. I don't know if it's working or complete or anything else about it. I'm looking forward to learning something by following along as you build your bench and install your vise.
