Al, it's a 53. A woodworking school changed out all their vises and was giving these away! I got the last one. I could barely drag it out to my car. I don't know if it's working or complete or anything else about it. I'm looking forward to learning something by following along as you build your bench and install your vise.
Are you kidding me??? Assuming it's in working condition (and it looks pristine) a Record 53 is easily worth $200-300. Nice!
Gale's Law: The bigger the woodworking project, the less the mistakes show in any photo taken far enough away to show the entire project!

Oh my, I don't deserve this. I'd better be a good steward of my outrageous fortune and put this to good use!

Since they were replacing these with totally new vices, what new vice did they select to replace them?

It would be interesting to know why they saw value in doing it, and what new capabilities it brought them.

I haven't figured that one out yet either but I'll look into it.

JP, don' think I could afford the freight charges to send all that cast iron your way so I guess I'll just have to find a use for it. I want to start using more hand tools and this might nudge me in that direction.
