Laser X Hairs for a Shopsmith?
I saw a YouTube video that had a laser cross hair on a drill press to mark the spot for drilling. Does someone know of a unit that would fit a Mark 500?
Thanks

Like a Norton bomb sight? Maybe Rieble could incorporate it into the umbrella light? For me, the Lazar line would have to be a 32nd" or less in width. Can you post the site?

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them.

Peachtree used to carry them (maybe they still do). Interesting method of a couple lights, one on each side to form the X. No clue if it can be adapted to fit the SS but for < $50 I am guessing that someone has tried. Whether they succeeded at an acceptable level?? Who knows...ERLover wrote:Like a Norton bomb sight? Re: Laser X Hairs for a Shopsmith?
I'm not impressed with lasers for this kind of work. I don't have anything like this on my Shopsmith, but I bought a miter saw for iron work, and it has a built in laser. I find the laser to be totally useless. I can eyeball the cuts far better than trying to follow the laser to make the cuts. This is another place where added technology only makes things worse.
Re: Laser X Hairs for a Shopsmith?
If it were bullet proof, MAYBE it would be useful. But adding lasers to something as oddly shaped as the Mark V headstock, which gets moved about as much as it does, and which is used for all kinds of attachments, is likely to result in the lasers getting bumped out of alignment or interfering with said attachments.

Ya algale I agree, I was looking how you could possibly mount it, it would have to be on the quill. Since it uses basically triangulation it has to be fixed, and if on the quill that would change when you extend it to drill.

Poor substitute for a center punch IMHO.

Agree with JPG. An awl for wood works fine for me.

To be honest I had not really looked at this as being something I needed or wanted but then I just drilled a whole bunch of holes and I can see it would or at least could have been a lot easier if I had such an attachment.
I'm going to look into this and see if I can find a style more suited to the shopsmith then the one shown.

edit:
After further review I can see an easy way to do this and make it very useful on a shopsmith. Anyone want to fund me a laser guide to play with? Yea didn't think so.... well it is on my list now and should be a piece of cake to do.
