Just look at the teeth and make sure there are no chips in the carbide and you will be fine. My favorite story for cutting metal objects in wood involves lead. Back in the 80's I was commissioned to do a house in Carmel designed by George Brook-Kothlow. All the doors ( 28) interior and exterior and all the windows ( 52 ) were specd out for vertical grain clear redwood. We obtained a large portion of the redwood from timbers that had been sitting at a local sawmill for many years. In fact the sawmill had been closed for at least a decade. Unbeknown to us the stack of timbers had been occasionally used by the owners as a backdrop for shooting. As we milled through it we would hit the occasional bullet. As we got the wood at a huge discount it was worth the hassle at the time. it didn't really phase the carbide blade on the table saw but it raised hell with the resaw and planer. The planer really startled us the first time as a bullet or piece of bullet went rattling around.

Then I guess you should send out your saw blades every time you use them and have them NDI'd to insure they are OK.dusty wrote:That may be valid theory but I don't want to be in the shop when it gets proven - one way or the other.

My father used to own a small saw mill years ago, and I can remember hitting various hardware in the trees when sawing. The worst one I remember was hitting a horseshoe that was apparently laid in the crotch of a tree and then grown around. I remember my dad saying many choice words and having to have the saw blade sent away to be repaired. My vocabulary was increased a little that day!
