Serial Number

Since I am now retired, I have decided to get into using my SS. I bought the unit second hand from a gentleman who bought the unit for his wife a s a 40th birthday present. He told me she wasn't too thrilled. The unit serial number is SS7629. I am trying to determine the date of unit manufacture as well as the unit model designation. Any thoughts? Is this a Mark V?

This chart provides only one possibility; that being 1973-1978.

I have one concern. I have never seen Shopsmith serial numbers expressed as SS7629.

Aah....The other chart presents the "rest of the story". Maybe. The serial numbers are still all 6-digit numbers.

Mark V 510. At least that is what the SN suggests.

Pix would verify that.

It could possibly have been upgraded to a 520.

I have one of the mystery dated machines from the early days after production started again post 1972. I would like to think that that box of records got misplaced in a move but who really knows?

The age is only a part of the tell of what you have.

Now having said that we will need a picture to help us determine what model you have. One of the nice things about the shopsmith is the upgrade path. My machine has been upgraded to the latest so only a few of the original parts are still from 1976 when I got it new from the factory.

Get us a picture and we can confirm what you have.

I previously inquired about what model my valued SS was. Looking at the nameplate, I have determined that the unit is a Mark V. While doing preventive maintenance I was able to determine that the unit is equipped with a 1 and 1/8 HP motor. This is more that sufficient for me to use the SS in the manner I desire (crafting various rough bird houses from free scraps of wood! I do have one question regarding the use of the machine. The nameplate is marked with a requirement to use the second shaft for jointer operations. With this said, can I use the normal sawing shaft for router operations? Also, does anyone have any suggestion about pertinent upgrades that might be of value to me? Thank you. Jim Bennett [jmb51@yahoo.com]

Is it possible that one digit is missing from the S/N?
Could it be 060?95?
