Broken 510 Table

Thank you all for the advice and the warm welcome!
I haven't figured out yet how to add my Location, I'm in Milwaukie, OR (close to Portland)

I wasn't sure if this was the type of part that ever came up on ebay so I figured I might have to look to getting a whole new table to replace it (which will probably still be cheaper than just ordering the part new)

It was one of those situation where I KNEW that I saw somewhere to be careful to never push by the tables but just forgot to communicate that to my husband. One of those moments you really really really wish you could have a do-over.

I will keep an eye out on ebay and CL and try giving customer service a call, it really was odd how it just sheared off, we were not going fast at all.

I'm afraid the seller is probably not going to be much help, he really didn't know much about it at all and had rarely touched it, some components were still in the boxes. He was an amazing help though, offered to drive the hour+ to our house so we didn't have to break down the SS into parts.

Yes, it looks like that may have been the case, I don't think he really knew what he was doing. I Noticed in the paperwork that he had ordered the router table and the separate router hood to go with it. I asked him about it and he said that he had thrown the router table away since it was a "useless attachment" It very well could be that in the moving process from another state he did bang it around quite a bit. There were two of us moving it and it just gave way on both sides at the same time.

I think you should count yourself very lucky that you moved it by the table, causing it to break when it did. As fragile as it apparently was, it may well have broken while sawing a large piece of wood. And that would be a very dangerous thing indeed.

Moving your Shopsmith by pushing/pulling on the main table. I have proven to myself that this is the worst thing a Shopsmith user can do, even worst than turning the speed control on a non running machine.

First I've ever heard of this. Who knew?! There aren't many other good handles on a Shopsmith and grabbing hold of the main table seems natural. Maybe that's why I've never had any luck with my SS in table saw mode.

There is knurled handle on each end.

Then there are the way tubes(and the bench tubes).

I have not(that I recall) ever pushed/pulled on the main table to move the SS.

However most of those 50 years were without casters, so those handles allowed raising the pulled end slightly. Nothing else was effective.

Gut feel tells me pushing/pulling on the table is not a good idea.

Casters are now resident!!!

Oh, I know this was a very very bad idea... but as someone pointed out, I'm really glad we did as it was weakened to the point that it would have surely broken, probably while I had something heavy on it.

Or when you were using it in saw mode which would have been REALLY disastrous.

Welcome to the forum!

I've never moved mine around by using the main table however, I just can't imagine it causing the casting to break. I'd bet the table had a fracture in the casting from a previous incident and just happen to let go on you..

Thank goodness you weren't running the table saw and have it snap off!

Well the word came back from ShopSmith...

"Our engineer saw these pictures and didn't see any weak casting or porosity. Unfortunately, you never know how something was treated when you buy a unit second-hand. The tie bar casting could have had a crack in the casting when you purchased it. The tie bar casting is item number 514344 with a cost of $ 153.21 plus S&H."

So I guess I'm looking for a beat up 510 table I can steahl the part from!

So now the question is, what should I do with the old table? find some legs and mount it somehow or part it out on Ebay? I didn't see any table parts when I've been looking maybe this isn't something that most people need replacement parts for?
