510 Table legs

Has anyone had problems removing the legs from a 510 table? If I drive the pin out will they come out easily or am I likely to damage the tie bar? I think that dusty did this before. Bob

Never done it but it is part of the procedure for the double tilt upgrade. See the bottom of page 10 of this manual for instruction on removing the legs from the tie bar. http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/manu ... _04-12.pdf

The pins come out but I believe they need to be replaced then. When you got the dual tilt kit you replace the legs and they give you new pins. They are tapered so you will need to go the right way if you know what I mean.

I can check part numbers a bit later tonight if that would help.

Thank you very much algale. That info made it clear that I should be able to remove the legs for shipping. Ed it would be easy enough to mark the inside/small end of the pin with a sharpie and drive from the inside out for removal. and reverse for reassembly. Thanks again for the help, Bob

I have a tie bar assembly, right now, that has been taken apart and reassembled about 3 time using the original pins. If you intend to reuse the pins, don't drive them out with anything other tha pin punches. Using the right size tool is a must.

I am due, however, for replacement pins..

Caution, be aware that when driving the ins (in or out) there is a lot of impact stree on the aluminum casing. I use strategically placed blocks of wood to avoid cracking the aluminum. There is some risk to the tie bar.

Had a little time plus it was near 60 degrees here today. I was able to remove the legs from the tie bar using the info that algale posted. Had no problems at all. I did put the tie bar in a vise though. I figured if ShopSmith recommended tapping the pins out without any back support it could not be that bad of a job. I told keddykat in a pm that I had hoped to use the legs to support the table on my drill press only SS. Not sure what scared her off as she could have had the tie bar that she needed for postage. Oh well. Bob

I think perhaps the discussion regarding leg removal etc. may have done the scaring. That and she be skittish re used stuff after this experience.

No question new will be better(warranty etc.).
