Boise Area Repair?

Hello!

I'm a new - used ShopSmith owner. While trying to clean my old unit, I made a stupid mistake. I was adjusting without the motor on. I heard/felt a snap and then the "Warning, Do not adjust unless motor is on!" sticker jumped out and slapped me. Lesson learned.

Anyway, I want to get it repaired. I live in the Boise, ID area. Anyone know of good people or places for nearby repair?

This is something I should probably try to do myself but been too busy with other things to do it over the past months so now just want it fixed.

Which direction were you adjusting it when the snap occurred(towards slow or towards fast).

Did you perhaps cause the clip on the end of the control sheave to get pulled off?(towards fast)

You may have stripped a tooth on the gear on the control knob.

You should be able to fix this yourself with a bit of help from here.

Pictures help immensely.

As JPG said it may not be that bad, and he eats and sleeps ShopSmiths.
What color is it?
If you have a sanding disc for it put it on and turn it by hand, and look at the spindles on the left side, does the lower one turn, if so the belt should be okay. How does it feel when turning by hand?

I've attempted to upload a photo of my ShopSmith. It's grey but I don't know what year / model it is. I purchased it used and don't know much else as I bought it from someone that was selling it for someone...

I attempted to remove the cover to see what's behind but don't see how this happens. The left side moves away to reveal the belts and the bottom drops off easy enough but the face seems firmly attached. Unlike what I did to brake it; I didn't try to force the cover up:-).

Any suggestions for revealing what's behind the power wheel?

If by the 'face' you are referring to the speed control dial, there is a small hole in the side of the dial that gets you access to a 3/32 set screw that retains the knob. That then gets you access to the outside parts of the speed control. Three screws hold that in place. Removing those three screws allows the speed control to be removed(there is a clip on the end of the control sheave that must be slipped off the quadrant gear(porkchop).

Oh! There is a small spring behind the speed control at the top of the opening. Do not lose it! It is easy to not notice it dropping and hiding behind/under something on the floor.

That is more than enough to digest at this point.

FWIW, that 3/32 set screw can be a real real bear to get on. You are trying to get on it completely blind.
