I have recently acquired a "Greenie" Shopsmith with basically all the tools and acc. I could want.
I already had a Grey one possibly from the 70's, and I am trying to decide which of the main system to sell, Ill keep all the tools and accessories that I need to work but I would be selling the main motor and stand as well as a planer and probably a band saw.
So my question is in the forums opinion which one would be better to keep?
I love that the "green has everything and is basically a "set", but the grey one is so much newer, and has a slightly different drive system. I think shopsmith has a reputation for reliability thats not found in many companies today. But i still think the newer motor might be better in the long run.
Keep the grey Shopsmith. It has the Poly-V drive and 1 1/8 HP motor. These 2 items are worth keeping the later Shopsmith. Why not make the earlier Shopsmith a MINI, cut the way tubes to 25 5/8" and no carriage and use it as a Power Station for two SPTs you will be using. The 3/4 HP motor is great for this purpose. This really cuts down on change over and set up times.
Bill's advice is mine as well. If you can keep it whole, do so,as it gives you double function of everything. If you just don't have the room, make a mini, or as a last resort perma-mount it to the wall as a dedicated Drill press.
If you have never worked having two SS's available to you, try it.... I think you will like the function.

Room is at a premium in my garage. So now on to looking into "mini" and or "Permanent Press"

I 5 or 6 it, make a mini with conduit, depending on usage, BS on one end disc sander on the other, jointer, not a planer as you called it on the gray one.

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them.
The first ? is, what can you get for 'one' of them. Then ask yourself what is it worth to you. I think the second answer is a larger number.
Since it is a greenie that you may consider shortening etc. be aware the bench tubes are a larger od than the way tubes.
IIWM, I would not cut any of the original tubes. A pair of way tubes cut 25 5/8 \ 26 3/8 or bench tubes cut 26 \\ 26 3/4 will make a mini. The smaller tubes will fit the greenie castings, but the bench tube spacing will be a bit(1/8") wide. A shim could be used to eliminate that.
Other than the band saw, what 'duplicates' do you have?

It looks like you are a turner, the gray machine belt will handle a "'catch" much better then the Greenie. I have 3 BS 2 SS and a Delta, all set up with different size blades, no readjusting because I dont have to change blades, 1/4"' on one 3/8s on an other, and on the Delta which has a riser and 12"' of resaw capacity a 1/2"'. But it is all what works for you, and what you use the most/least.
