Writing about why I will be selling them made me take a good look at the reasons.
i think (though this is as I write so who knows what I will think tomorrow), that the Mark 7 is good enough for what I want in terms of a one is sufficient rather than many tools - multiples of SS.. I guess if that were not the case, I would be more passionate about keeping all of them.
I could exist without the extra money that their sales will bring, but as my tastes in woodworking change (aka more expensive goodies), the extra will help get me to what I want sooner rather than later. I've come to greatly appreciate the tremendous motor that is the PowerPro when using it as a lathe and drill press. I've not ever tried the 10 as a drill press, however the PP seems extraordinary no mater what I have to drill. A few months back I even used it as a tap starter in metal plate. The lathe portion is so inviting that I have started accumulation of expensive chisels and bought a used Tormek T-7 to keep those chisels at their peak.
A separate sanding station would be interesting, but nearly all my sanding is now on small chess pieces using rifflers. I've got a great Bosch RO sander with 5" and 6" heads for larger projects and I don't mind getting out the SS belt sander on the few occasions it is the better choice.
The 10 was my Dad's and I had not planned to part with it, but it has a jointer and on a massive angle iron frame. Somewhere, someone will enjoy getting to know it. It would be great for turning, but the speed and oops I screwed up again please bail me out control of the PP make the M7 fantastic for me as a lathe. The 10 still sits in the garage however the other three have been relegated to the backyard on platforms under tarps. Not an honorable place for such fine machines.
When facing reality (something I often hate and fear doing)
Hope this helps explain the Shopsmith situation. As far as my ex.... A few years after we divorced she became a lawyer (mainly research for legal opinions). It helped explain a WHOLE lot!
Be well,
Ben
