A simple Sanding Belt cleaning stick
I've been out of the shop all fall and winter and finally found some time to get back in it. Was sanding on some Padauk and it gummed up the strip sanding belt awful quick so I had to get a cleaning stick. I had to look up one on my phone so the "rep" at the big blue box store knew what I was talking about, they didn't have one. Explained it twice to the "rep" at the big orange store before he gave up and said look in paint, paint had just sent me down to him, they didn't have one. Went to a "local" national chain that starts with a Kro*** who is pretty good at having what I need but nope, didn't have one.
Guess where I finally found one?
I'm gonna stop calling this a hobby and start calling it a sport with all the running around I have to do to get stuff anymore.

Back in the early days a "secret" stash for this was crape sole shoes, was it hush puppy shoes(?) at the resale stores. I think those shoes are out of fashion so I don't know how much luck you would have these days.
It was always funny taking up a couple of pairs of shoes in different sizes, the biggest you could find, to get checked out both ways if you know what I mean. This was back in the 70's when I was to cheap to buy the real ones.... perhaps even before shopsmith was selling them. Wonder if they still do? Well I'm sure someone will look it up for me.......

I know Harbor Freight sells them, because I bought mine there.

HF, WoodCraft, Rockler some good tooling hardware stores, they make good erasers for pencil marks on raw wood too.

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them.

I always keep a couple of those non-cork wine corks to use when I can't find my sanding stick. Works great but watch your fingers.

I wonder if a 1 1/4 diam dowel drilled out at one end to hold the cork.db5 wrote:I always keep a couple of those non-cork wine corks to use when I can't find my sanding stick. Works great but watch your fingers.

Re: A simple Sanding Belt cleaning stick
Just a health note on sanding and cutting. The first part of January, a neighbor needed a window trim cut to fit. When I put it on the table saw (Shopsmith 500), I noticed that the material was something like molded Masonite. I was in a hurry to get the car packed, get the wife packed up and be on the road to see our daughter. I didn't take the time to don my respirator. Shame! A few days later, I developed a cough. It felt like a chest cold. Figuring that it would go away in a few days, with OTC treatments, it got tighter in the chest over the next 2 weeks. Went to doc who said, you have a moderate case of bronchitis. Some breathing treatments and antibiotics later, I am doing better. But,they gave me the third degree about smoking. I have not smoked in 46 years, but got to thinking of what I had been breathing. It was the dust of the one cut board and sanding it which produced much dust. I am still coughing, not contagious, but tired from coughing so much. Keep your health so we can continue using these wonderful machines and making family and friends happy.
