Old kitchen scale needs help

While looking for something else I came upon an old kitchen scale with the clock like dial. The "hand" broke and I had intended to repair it someday but now the old hand pieces are missing. The old hand was plastic so repair was questionable anyway and broken in two places to boot.

So I was thinking this might make an interesting project, the making of a hand. It would be nice to duplicate the broken version but since that is not something I have any more but I did find a person selling one of these here:

Looking at the shape and how thin it is I'm wondering what might be a good wood choice? So how do you clock people who make clocks do for hands? Buy them? Make them? It looks like this could be a good deal of work so perhaps just buying a clock hand might work?

Hi Ed,

Hands are certainly available. I think the only problem you might find is how the hand is attached. I would agree with press on since there is no nut holding the hand. So the shaft diameter is the determining factor. There are lots of clock sites out there. Measure the shaft diameter and I bet you can find a hand.

Craft stores sell hands that fit the common quartz clock movements. My wife made a clock from a Betty Boop metal poster and bought the hands at Michael's because she wanted different hands. The Cuckoo Cuckoo clock I have from Germany has wood hands. A scroll saw and VERY fine blades.

If you are considering making it from wood, birch plywood is available in 1/16", 1/32", and even 1/64" thicknesses. Check any hobby store that sells models and supplies.

Most that make clocks purchase the mechanism and hands. The scale hand is long and the scale snaps back very quickly. So, you want a hand that is very light (mass, inertia). I would look on Amazon or your local Hobby Lobby.

I've purchace hands and movements from Kockit, they have faces too. I scrolled the numbers on this one.

If you still have the pieces, you can likely fix them with the Lazer Bond Glue - yes as seen on TV. I have repaired a few things including a broken power jack in a friend's laptop. It worked very effectively.

I wasn't able to get back to try and pull off the old hand. Like I said the two parts are missing so while I though I had saved them they are not in the box with the scale anymore.

I did get some bondic a while back for project. I am impressed at how well it works. How well it would do with the hand I don't know. The few things I have done are still all holding, well that was good news as I saved myself a few dollars on the repairs, enough to cover the cost of the glue and then some.

I was thinking the idea of the really thin plywood might be interesting. I have some airplane plywood stuff away from a project a few years back but I don't think any of it is really thin but that stuff sure could work.

The clock hands are really cheap so that is promising as well. When I measure the scales shaft I will have a good idea if any of those will be a reasonable fit. I think making the hole a bit larger could be done pretty easy but then I've never tried.

The wife and I were trying to remember what happened to the scale, most likely some thing to do with the young kids and an open dial face but the details are lost. Well that will happen after 34 years.

Our old dentist who just retired last spring loved the "vbond". We had the same dentist from 1978 to 2015. His replacement got all kinds of fancy new cameras, monitors, people to clean your teeth, personal assistant, office manager, digital x-ray machine and want us to help pay for it all. Yea that wasn't going to happen. Found a new one and so far so good with him.
