Allen Key set screws

Post by AlsyUK »

Hi All. I have had a Model 500 for about 20 years with a fair bit of use in the lathe mode. I am now finding the set screws on the lathe tool rest are getting worn. As I am in the UK it might be easier for me to get replacement screws locally or off the internet. What size are the the screws - I think they might be 5/16" but is it UNC UNF or a metric? I had 'borrowed' screws from other accessories now I need to get replacements. The Parts manual does not give the sizes, unhelpfully. Alan

I know you said you are in the UK. so I do not know if you have access to Amazon.com or not.
if so do a search for shop smith and they have set screw set listed, I believe there is 6 or 8 set screws per pack, sorry I did not see what the price was.
I hope this helps you

There is an upgrade kit that replaces the set screws with handled bolts on the lathe rest. Here is a website for the upgrade in the UK. http://martins-supplies.co.uk/presta/la ... evers.html

Dusty put together a really good post on these in January of last year from work that was done by another forum member. Mike

That is a great reference and I am sure it will be a great help to him.
However, I don't think is shows the set screws for the lathe tool rest.

Actually, the fifth one down says its for the lathe tool rest:

102585 297 1 Setscrew, 7/8” Long (Lathe, Tool Rest) SCR-5/16-18X7/8 SOC SET K 5/16”-18 x 7/8” Black Oxide Alloy Steel Knurled Cup Point Socket Set Screw (5/32” Allen Wrench)

Didn't know if he had the universal tool rest, or the standard, but since he said it is 20 years old and worn, I'm betting it's the standard.

The other option is to get the levers. Here is a post about how I have learned to like them.

http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/gener ... t4309.html

You can get the levers other places as well but I like the ones with the allen screw rather then the finger grip.

Anyway it is just another though that you may or may not find you like.

Thanks to all who have replied to my query. I have gain the info that I wanted in that the screws are 5/16" UNC Set screws of various lengths and contact point subject to where the screw is to be used. The info that Dusty and Mike provided is all of use. I am going down the line of replacing the orig style set screws over the lever system (for the lathe rest) as they have been in use 20 plus years and I need to replace screws 'borrowed' from other items that were not in use. Also I can multiple packs of 5 screws for way less than just getting the lever system for the lathe rest.
