Question for bandsaw owners

Post by cgallery »

I have an interest in trying to use some Carter guides designed for Shopsmith bandsaws on a non-Shopsmith (Inca) bandsaw. Carter doesn't seem to offer anything for my little 9" (wheel) Inca. But in studying the pictures at the Carter website, the Shopsmith design looks very similar to what I've got.

Would anyone be willing to measure the square (I think it is square) post that extends from the back of their guides and tell me the height, width, and approx. length?

My current guide's post is a 10mm (.393") square cross-section that is approx. 1.5" long. There is a little play when I move the shaft in the socket, so I could probably go a tiny bit larger. If the Shopsmith post is smaller, then I suppose that would be a problem. If it is a little large, I could reduce it pretty easily (the Carter guides are made form aluminum right?).

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I took a rough measurement. Referring to this parts-list:
http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/part ... pview2.htm

the #75 Guide Block Bracket has, at its rear protrusion, approximately 8.1mm square cross section. The total length of this protrusion is about 38mm.

There are springs also which hold this guide-block-bracket inside the mating part (#80). Perhaps with these springs accounted for, the square hole in post #80 could be as large as 10mm x 10mm?

good luck,
Chris

I have the Carter Bearing Guides on a SS Bandsaw and they work well. I have found that ceramic guides work almost as well. Give Carter a call for more help regarding your saw.

Thanks Chris and LDH. I think I could even make 8.1 work as I could add a U-shaped piece to take up that slack.

I think I'll call Carter tomorrow and tell 'em what I've got to work with and check their suggestions. But if they don't have any ideas I'll probably just try to get the unit design for Shopsmith to work.

BTW, I'm hoping to get the Carter Stabilizer, not the roller guides.
