Do 500 attachments fit a 520?

Post by psf513 »

I have a 1990 500 with band saw, jointer, scroll saw, and dust collector. Am thinking of upgrading to a 520 but am not sure if the attachments will fit.

THANKS
Pete

I am not thinking of a brand new 520. Looking for a broken in version.

Yes they do, but finding a broken 520 is going to be your major task.

I would suggest that any reasonably good Shopsmith could be upgraded to whatever level you want. Why wait while you look for a 520; you may never find one. A 500, 505 or 510 all offer the same opportunities and maybe a more rewarding experience.:)

Hi Pete,
dusty is right; finding a used 520 will be tough. As an upgrade from a 500 to a 520 is pricey, you may look for a used 510, which the upgrade to a 520 wood be much less pricey for. And yes, all of the SPT's that you have will work on the 520, whether or not it is a new one, a used one or an upgraded one. That is one of the beauties of a Mark V!:D

All of my arbors and miters go from one to another. I have a 500 and 510 and I use all even in between my ER's except for the miter gage won't go on an ER. If it bolts to the drive of the 500 I found it fits my 510 and vise versa.
But I am still a beginner, only been in the SS hipe since 93 took that long to talk the wife into it now the shop is full and still looking for more.

This is true, but he was asking about the SPT's. If psf513 found a used 510 or 520, it wood probably come with the miter guage and some arbors. If he bought new, it definitely wood!:)

edit: I have never had a 500, but there is no "T-Slot Washer" on the 500 miter guage. It may "fit" into the 505/510/520 table slot though, and maybe that is what Bill is saying. As for the saw blade arbors, see this thread: https://forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=1932&highlight=arbors

I can imagine that the sellers wood want quite a bit for the 520's, but you should be able to find a 510 for a lot less, and upgrade it to a 520 with the SS kit. Sale right now: http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/catalog/upgrade/510toprofence.htm $374.70 for the upgrade kit.

Hi Pete,

You know the SPT's will work. The miter gauges are the same except that the 505/510/520 have the t washer. The 500 miter gauge will work in the newer tables. The arbors on the newer machines are longer to line up with the rifing knife on the upper guard. The 500 arbors will not line up with that knife. The sanding disc also has a longer hub, again to work with the lower guard. The mortising attachment holddown will need a new support rod with a t-nut on the end to mount on the top of the fence. Anyway, I sent you a PM with some additional info. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
