The end of the shaft is full round. The set screw must be fully retracted to get motion off the shaft.
Think of 'not slanted' setscrews as an annoyance rather than a hazard.
As usual we tend to 'discover' something then beat it into submission in order to fully understand 'it'.
Unfortunately when mentioned later, those not part of the discovery babbling become alarmed due to only partial understanding(it is a problem becomes the sole attribute).
The important thing to glean from this thread which you started(seeking help) is to realize the SS requires an adapter to chucks that are typically designed to mate to threaded lathe shafts and that there are different sizes and thread pitch.
Beyond that it is pretty much a matter of 'taste' and intended use.
Point on JPG. It is all about understanding what is going on and getting an explanation for it.
OK, let me clear up some things I said that have contributed to the controversy/misunderstanding in this thread.
I said that all my arbor set screws (18 of them) were round end. So then I asked the question, why does a tilted set screw hole make a big difference. As it turns out upon further inspection they are not round. The actually have a flat spot on the end although depending how you view them they may appear round. OK, a senior moment. See the first picture.
As far as the dog nose screw that Ed posted, I agree with you JPG. How would you know from that picture that the end is brass. Well, I have 2 SS saw blade arbors for 5/8" blades. They both have brass tips in the dog nose style. See the second picture.
I apologize for the miss-information I posted.
Now, here is some more info to add to the subject.
I decided to check my SPT connector hubs. The 2013 Power pro that came with hubs and the 1999 head stock that I bought on eBay both have the full spline upper hubs. The lower hubs have a straight set screw as expected since the lower shaft does not have a tapered flat. However both upper hubs have a straight set screw also. See the third photo.
Now comes the wierd part. The hubs from my brand new bought from SS 1994 are different. The lower hub is tilted for a tapered flat.

Now here is the more wierd part. The upper hub is tilted the wrong way.

I don't think it is a BIG problem since Magna never addressed it an SS over the years has not been consistent.
