From the vantage point of the picture (which could be an optical distortion) they do not appear perpendicular to the base. It looks like they are twisted just a bit as well, all of which could be optical.

Do you have another known good unit to compare it to?

Before jumping off the cliff due to worrying about the centering, take a gander at the positioning of the eccentric. That will affect the horizontal and vertical positioning of the control sheave and button bearing.

Looking at the wear marks on the original quad assy (right), it appears that this problem was there before. The rebuilt assy (left) seems to be straight. Do you think it's possible the the mounting surface on the case could be tweeked? Just grasping for ideas. Come too far to compromise!

I thought about that. I looked at it and it appears "normal". I had posted pictures of the eccentric earlier in this thread. I just don't see anything out of sorts (through my untrained, gettin old eyes!). Just a little frustrated!

If you even suspect the headstock is tweaked as you put it, then temporarily mounting the other quadrant / speed control assembly should tell you if the problem remains exactly the same or changes with the assembly.

Three screws and you should know pretty much immediately.

Installed the old assy...same results! It pretty much rides in the old wear mark!

I have noticed in my rebuild greenie and doing maintenance on my nephews greenie, that it rides off to the side also, I never worried about it because helped a friend do some rehab on a Goldie and noticed it riding the same on the button bearing.

If your concern has to do with the leg tweaking, the important thing is the centering of the quadrant over the worm gear. Any other mis alignments are not relevant to the leg tweaking. After all you did not alter the worm gear etc..

And when you 'looked' at the 'normal' eccentric, where was the widest part? If at "6 o'clock" the button would ride high on the quadrant gear 'slide'.

Rethunk it (on paper)...JPG, you're a genius! When you turn the eccentric to tighten the belt, you also affect the point of contact of the button bearing. Do you agree?

JPG, I think my drawing is askew (I'm relying on memory, away from home), however I get the jest of it. Worm gear not altered on either assembly, I did have to turn the eccentric to tighten the belt (If I remember, slot is at approx. the 8 o'clock position.)
