Original rip fence update my design.

One thing that I be conflicted over is the parts that make for 'smooth' operation. They be plastic. The older designs are metal to metal contact. I cannot help but consider that is more 'secure/rigid'.

Even with the UHMW, the LOCKING CONTACTS are still the Back Lock and Fence Clamp.I have locked it down and grabbed the fence proper and tugged on it and it stays put.The Beisiemer Fence System I had used nylon glides and adjustment points and my Saw Stop fence uses nylon glides and nylon adjustment points, neither of them ever have a problem with slipping out of place once locked down, that is where I got the idea from.

I was referring to the 520 fence. However, the plastic on your hot rod mod becomes the reference surface rather than the bevels intended in the original design.

If you prefer that, than so be it. Having not experienced the problem it serves to overcome, I do not recommend it.

My concern re the 'plastic' parts was wear and to a lesser degree compression.

BTW If you had cup point screws in the base, THAT was the problem all along. They should be flat/oval point.

Cup or serrated cup points will scar the rail.

Cup point screws are what came with it, both of them. PS. UHMW is a long hard wearing product, it is not impact resistant, but wear resistant, that is why I used it.

Don't know how you got the wrong screws but you did. I checked the three rip fences I have and they all have the oval points. The one is from the 1976 new from the factory one and another is from the updated fence that I got just after they came out and the third is from if I remember right a 79 or 80 that I got used.

I know it doesn't matter to you at this point but for other readers the set screws should look like this:

Given you have the wrong set screws I have to wonder what other issues your fence might have. Do you want to review more of this or should we just drop it?

I've never found them in a hardware store in my area. I either get them by ordering from shopsmith or by grinding a cup one into a round. I haven't tried to get them online but I'm sure some place must sell them.

Let us know if you find them local and what store it was.

Why bring politics into this discussion? Maybe "it can't be wrong" is too strong of a statement, but having used both systems, I speak from user knowledge, and Biesiemer is a leader in after market fences, that system is MUCH easier to adjust and slides easier than metal to metal. That is simply my reason for making the modification.You don't like it don't do it, keep diving a Model T, if that is your preference

Don't take it personally jj, this is a tough crowd to please or impress. A lot of know-it-alls. But they are very smart, experienced and helpful and I'm always glad for their input. I admire your grit in sticking to your guns this long.
