That's how my addiction started... I was looking for a lathe. I think that wood turning is a gate way drug.

When I tell people how old my shopsmiths are and they see how well they run, it shocks the heck out of people.

the Build quality is immeasurable, and the support is unbelievable. There are not many products that were produced in the 50's that you can still find parts for today on a regular basis.

I spent 28 years wishing for a Shopsmith and bought my 510 new in 1988. Then I bought the "Old Gray Mare" for $200 at a farm consignment auction. I sold a couple of extra items that came with it for more than I paid for it. Then... I started getting ready to retire and wanted a couple more. Then... there was a lot of talk about the mother ship crashing and burning and I wanted a good supply of parts. Then... we discovered how much fun it was to buy on Ebay and make road trips around the country east of the Mississippi picking them up and seeing the country. Since a few of them were partials with a lot accessories I finally lost accurate count at 25. Finally had to quit cold turkey... No regrets.
Most are now stacks of parts in an unused grain bin here on the farm. Extra accessories all reside in the woodshop on shelves. If anything ever does happen to the mother ship (I hope not) I'm ready.

My older brother used to think I was addicted, and thought that since the
mid '60s. (When we were kids, the guy next door had a Mark VII, and big
bro heard ALL the horror stories.)

So, last October/November range, he got one of my Model 10s, and LOVED
the lathe.

Last week he expressed a desire to get a decent drill-press, since his was a
desktop HF type one. I told him to use his OTHER (Model 10) drill-press.
Couple days later, he was raving about the build and quality of the thing.
Then, I told him to try it as a horizontal drill-press.

Now, he's addicted!

OK, an update on this story of mine.

Was over to my big brother's today, and we worked on "updating his
model 10 to do some "repurposed" stuff. He wanted a stand for his
miter saw. Good quality Lowe's Kobalt brand saw.

HIS idea, was to mount on a plywood base, that was cleated to fit on the Model 10
saw table, and use extension tables as the tables for the miter saw.

Did it, and it worked just fine.

Now, he wants a dedicated drill-press, and is NOT about to get a "homeowner grade"
one. So for Easter Sunday, we will be assembling another Model 10 for him, on my
"shorty Model 10 base." (Regular metal legs but the boards are cut short enough that
the diagonal braces meet at one screw, in the center.)
