I think someone has already asked this, but which model?
With my Model 10 tubes, being almost 1/4 inch wall thickness,
(.210 2 was the last reading I saw) the grade is a non-
player here.
On the Mark series, grade or thickness is a deal-breaker.
The clamps can compress the tubes.

10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.
Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.

So back to the point of the post. Yes you can weld tubing and even hand welding will work if it is clamped correctly and the welding done correctly as to not distort the parts. But having said that a welding shop that does tubing will have a set up where they can give you back your parts and have a hard time even finding the actual weld. Minimal cost and no work might be the way to go.

I agree completely Ed...
I might have even said so in my earlier post if I had not been so close to dozing off at the time. I'm getting really good at dozing off...
A lot depends on personal circumstances. I have a long time background in metal fabrication of many types and a decent metal shop. Not highly sophisticated but it has served me well for a long time. I also have a stack of SS tubes so if I am unhappy with the results I can just try again, no extra cost.
You mentioned that drive shaft and it may very well be that a drive shaft shop might be a good place to start looking. Just get a price first. Personally I get sticker shock kind of often these days. It might be an age thing.
