Nova 9019

I noticed that nova is now offering a "flexible point drive" which is their answer to the steb drives. I have one on order and should have it a few days, for the longest time it seems they were "out of stock". Early marketing or popular who knows.

I have a pair of these that I got from PSI, one rolled off my under shopsmith cabinets and hit the floor and the short fall damaged it pretty badly. So I'm getting a replacement for that and then I'll see how I like them and if I want to get the other two.

The fact they fit in the G3 and other chucks lets you have steb like centers on a shopsmith.

Going rate seems to be list price of $39. I didn't find anyone with a discount.

It was in my mail box today!

It came in a small plastic container and looked like this:

It was in a bag and has that same goop on it as other nova stuff. It was in a bag so it was in good shape.

The pin is spring loaded as expected. You have access to/for doing things to it via a screw on the back side.

It mounts nicely and you could leave jaws in place if you wanted to I think.... the chuck was without jaws so I didn't actually test that yet but I will.

I'm looking forward to cleaning it up and using it before too long and will do a review after that.

Hi Ed.

I was wondering about your choice of size. Was there some specific Shopsmith related reason to go with the 1/2" versus the 7/8" or 1-1/4"?

How is it working so far?

Some years ago I had seen the stebs centers but they only fit the "other folks" lathe designs so when I found them at PSI I figured I'd get them, well I found them for a better price with shipping on ebay so I got them there but they are the PSI ones. I was turning a piece of really old cedar that proved to be difficult for my other centers to get a grip on. The new center worked really well and while I don't use them all the time I do use them from time to time. The disadvantage to this style is that they are mounted in a chuck so sometimes the chuck being there makes it more challenging to turn with the placement of things, so sometime it is just best to go old school.

Anyway I'm a big fan of the idea of these and think they have a place in my turning tool world. The smaller one I had I ended up setting on my under shopsmith tool chests while re-configuring the lathe. It rolled off and fell the 16" or so to the floor and landed on the teeth enough to damage them pretty badly. I tried to fix it as best I could be I was never happy with it after that so when I saw that Nova was coming out with a set I decided to wait and go that route. I had been unhappy with just about everything I've gotten from PSI that is lathe related, the exception had been these centers. So while it was my own dumb fault for the damage done I still think if the same thing happened to my new one there would be far less damage done.

So Nova announced them but it took a long time to find them online to buy and I just waited since it was winter and I'm not able to use the shop as much anyway. I have yet to use the new one, I do have a project that is in the wings but we are back in the 30's temperature wise so shop time is still not as abundant as it will be.

As to why the smaller one, simple that is the one to replace the PSI one that I damaged. The larger sized one from PSI is still undamaged and working fine so while I'd like to get the other sizes from Nova I'll wait until I have checked out the one I have and then it will likely be the other sizes will be added to my list for purchase soon. I'd like to end up with all three sizes when I'm done and then pass the working PSI one to someone else.

I'll try to remember to post some progress on this when it happens.

Good news, Ed. Thanks for the detailed post. FYI, Oneway makes a 1/2 in. steb center for use on the Shopsmith without a chuck. I don't own one, though, so I can't provide more info.

It is hard to see in the photo, but on the Oneway Safe Drivers there are no teeth on the cup like on a Steb center, it is a smooth ring.

It is interesting that oneway has a shopsmith driver, there must be a back story to this and I wish I knew it. I'd also like to know if Shopsmith has approved of this, it does use the shopsmith name..... And, well I always like to know is the set screw straight or at the shopsmith angle???

They sure don't provide much information, I'm guessing the point is spring loaded but maybe not? I'm not sure I will be the first in line here to find out but I'll add it to my list but it is going to be pretty far down at this point.

Does anyone know if you can buy a Headstock Spindle Adapter (Shopsmith 5/8-Inch to 1-Inch 8tpi chuck with female threads? Everything I have seen are male threads. Or is there an adapter that provides a MT #2 at he spindle drive?

Simple answer, no.

I have played with a few ideas and none have been as good as I hoped for nor do they work with every MT 2 part only short ones.
