Upgrading my 520 to PowerPro

Post by camerio »

So I made the calculation of what I need and I came to this list ...
556189 Power Pro refurbished head
556210 Double Tilt
556224 New casters
556425 Guide template plus drill to install the new casters
A grand total of 2400US$ Shopsmith prices ... dont know about the canadian dealer prices ?
Our dollar is very low right now so it would come up to 3130CND$
I would take a refurbished headstock, I am too far away to get some service if the Power Pro does not function correctly, so I would still have my original headstock in case.
Am I forgetting something in my list?

No, but, you don't NEED the castors and the drilling guide and bit comes with the castors. Also you don't NEED the double tilt. To be a MK 7 upgrade you need the double tilt but you can do that later if cost is an issue. The Power Pro head stock works fine as is on any MK V.

Well of course prices keep going up. If you don't buy now you will pay more later. You asked if you needed anything else. No you don't. I replied with a $400 saving probably close to $500CND so what is the point?

John, since I am far away from the store in Toronto, 9 hours by road, I would go for the whole thing once. Shipping is not included in my calculation right now.
I cannot buy from shopsmith directly as of yet except through a member of this forum and still shipping is not free.
I appreciate you input, I just wanted to see if I was forgetting something and I am just at the planning stage.
Lowes is buying Rona in Canada, maybe we will have some presentations coming to us like in Montreal, I am 3 hours from there.
Thank you again.

Let me help you spend a little more. If you have a lift assist then you will need a upgrade to lift the powerpro. If you don't have the lift assist keep in mind the powerpro adds some serious weight (I think I heard 25 pounds) so you might need or want that.

The casters are ok and if you want the drill guide for the extra $18 then get it. You can do it with the paper templates or even by hand which is what I did because shopsmith had messed up in several attempt trying to get that information right. Keep in mind if you have an older machine you will also have to change the lever on the caster bars location.

These are nice:

Other wise I'd say you are good to go.

I totally understand. I was stationed at CFB Bagotville for 4 years in the 80's. However, we had the advantage of getting things from the states without customs.

Where are you exactly?

Camerio, I am going to play devil's advocate here. At that kind of money, would you be better off keeping your Mark 5 intact and just ordering a new Mark 7? You can get discounts various ways, plus a"free" SPT when you order through some of the channels. You could have the new Mark 7 for less than 4000 USD (unless the prices have dramatically changed). Food for thought ..... :)

That's a really good idea.
