Thanks for the update! Glad to know there's no proven human issue.

Back to the original post; I can't wait to see what projects come from this wood. I don't have anything like that kind of stock available to me.

The Sassafras is pretty soft, and I've been wanting to try to some hand-cut dovetail techniques. The board had a split in it, but I thought I'd go ahead and use it. Trying out some mitered through-dovetails, I screwed up one corner pretty bad on sawing. So I just started assembling that one first. I cut some shims up to about 3/32" manually. But other spots needed shims less than 0.020" thick. So I used the Strip Sander to 'wedge down' some already-thin veneer stock. It helped! The end product may not be gift-worthy, more like something I keep to remind myself of mistakes and lessons...

Hold that thought... I am thinking of making a couple of ziplock bags o' Sassafras plane shavings once I get a top and bottom put on this box

. I had a bowl of shavings on the table for my wife to enjoy, but being exposed to the air, the aroma went away after 2-3 days. So a sealed baggie might be my next idea.

As a kid we would break off the green limbs of the sassafras tree and eat the bark.
I dined regularity on sassafras, tea berry and birch.

Well THAT explains a lot!!!!

I have heard of tree huggers, but tree eaters??? Tried willow?

Nope i was a lucky kid had a woods at the end of our back yard. Old timer taught us kids what trees we could eat, what berries, and what mushrooms. Also taught us to eat rubbarb stems but not the leaves.

I was contemplating putting this box on a base with exposed moldings at the bottom, but I decided it might look cleaner if I just 'carved out' some corner-legs from the bottom edges of the 4 sides of the box. I didn't want to saw out very much wood (and lift the base level too high), because this box might be used for certain bottles of larger diameter. I decided to Horizontal-Bore some small terminal points, and then used the overarm router to remove material between those 2 small decoration points per side. Here's progress to date:
