I am very new to the world of ShopSmith. I knew of its various uses before, and always thought they were very cool. I have a portable Bosch table saw, a nice circular saw and other various hand tools, but that is about it. Although I would love to have it all, I can't afford to buy multiple machines and I don't have the space. Now I have the opportunity to buy a used ShopSmith locally and I don't know what I should be looking for to make sure I am not getting in over my head with costly repairs before I even get started. I do not have a serial # or model # at this point. I will later after I go look this evening. I have included the pictures from Craigslist and will take many more. I am not going to buy tonight. I will wait until I have learned more about it. The seller says he has replaced the bearing and fitted the machine with heavy duty casters. He has only used it as a lathe, sander and a a handful of times as a drill press since he owned it. He is asking $300 for it. Do you think this is fair? He seems firm. However I am the only interested party in 30 days on Craigslist so we shall see.
I am reading over this before I go tonight. SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop. .

At a quick glance it will take some effort to clean up and usable again, and depending on how much effort you want to put into making it pretty again you will have your work cut off for you.
I do not see a miter gauge or saw arbors so that is not a good sign. The headstock colors look strange, some of it should be the same color as the "green" trim so that perplexes me.
It looks like it has had a hard life for so little use.
If it were me I don't think I would pay $300 for it, maybe $200 if it runs.
If you don't mind waiting I think you could do better.

Thanks for the info. This is exactly what I was hoping to see. I will ask if he has the arbors and miter gauge. He is not original owner. So who knows how much use it saw before he got his hands on it. It does run according to him and I will check. I thought the headstock colors were odd too because I didn't see anything like them when I google imaged older models. I am going to take a look but remain reserved on the idea of this on. I dont know your local but I think I would pass on that one, even at 200$. I have seen much better, complete ones with a jointer for around 250-300$ here in WI.
The legs look like a greenie, but the head stock looks gray. Check the name plate for HP, 3/4 or 1 1/8HP and Serial #. It will be on the left side as you are facing the speed dial, by the 2 spindles.

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them.

It appears to be two different machines put together... As already mentioned, The condition is very ruff looking for what was mentioned as far as use goes...
No saw arbors, No miter gauge, Wrong headstock for the base. All red flags!!!
JMO, If you can come up with an additional $200.00, You should be able to find a better machine with at least a band saw.
I was given a Mark V with bandsaw and jointer along with extra blades for everything, extra steel sanding discs and paper refills, the whole sha-bang, too much to list and it was free... I promised the guy I would take care of it and that's exactly what I have done...
The deals are out there so, Think it over!!!!!!!!!!
