Today on The Billy Goat Trail

Post by algale »

The Billy Goat Trail is a hike along the Potomac River just outside of DC. Today I went with my 15 year old who spotted this copperhead just off the trail.

Gale's Law: The bigger the woodworking project, the less the mistakes show in any photo taken far enough away to show the entire project!

They say there are no copperheads here in Ohio, but we definitely had them in Tennessee when I was a boy. My most memorable sighting was when my brother and I were canoeing on the little fishing lake we lived on. We had paddled all the way up to the mouth of the small river that fed it, and were right along the shoreline. All of a sudden there was a big commotion in the shallow water, maybe 20 feet ahead. The splashing soon subsided, and then we saw a copperhead swimming away, with a little sun perch chomped sideways in his mouth. It looked something like this photo (that I just found on the internet), except that the sun perch was smaller and much prettier.
