Correct, spiral fluting. I've got some plans going for a fluting gizmo jiggy whatchamacallit but I won't get started for a few weekends. In that case, You can lock the quill feed lever and wedge some tooth picks in the spline at the pulley end. Once your finished, Advance the quill and the tooth picks should pull back out.
Just make sure you leave enough sticking out so if needed, you can grip them with pliers.
