I'm off to drive 90 minutes to pick up a grey ShopSmith scroll saw (not the jig saw) for $150. Looks to be in good shape, so we'll see. He has a nice looking 510 from the 90's or later there, but that's not in the budget. Who knows, maybe he will decide to give it away for free? It's a moving sale--nobody wants to lug that thing around!
I recall reading in the past that the upgrade below was seen as a good upgrade for the grey scroll saw to bring it more in line with the teal. Is this accurate? Any other updates to consider or skip?

11" Band Saw (Aluminum Table System upgrade) (SN 34026)
4" Jointer (SN 02-18-98)
6" Belt Sander (SN 19012)
18" Jig Saw (SN 17407)

12" Thickness Planer (SN 10406)
Strip Sander (SN pending)
DC3300 Dust Collector (SN 102088)
I am unable to compare it to the Teal model scroll saw but I incorporated that upgrade years ago and have been very satisfied with the performance of my scroll saw. When it really shines is when you are doing inside cuts but that is not due to the upgrade.

Gave away my 16" Craftsman scroll saw to a friend who has started making ships in a bottle. He has no large power tools and so I think it will help him out quite a bit. Brought this beauty home. She's a '93. I think he used it mostly as a table to set things on. :P

I upgraded mine and liked the upgrade at least for a while. My fingers are having trouble tightening the little levers so I have swapped in some allen head screws and use a wrench.
I also have had to do a rebuild because of excessive play in mostly the upper arm. Shopsmith no longer makes the bushing for my saw so I had to order a part that was close and then modify it. JPG was the first to do this and he and I both had good results doing so. With some luck yours might be fine.
Nice find! There is one on CL near me but the seller wants way too much for it as its been on CL for quite a while now.
