Milwaukee 35mm forstner bit - good purchase

Post by mauka »

Quick note on recent purchase, Milwaukee 35mm Forstner bit, purchased at local hardware store and used to install euro-style hinges for a shop-made 80" by 36" rolling storage cabinet. This cabinet is designed to hold my small compressor, track saw, and long clamps.

The Forstner set I had stopped at 1", and I considered buying another set but decided to go with the right size instead of close enough. I expect to build a few more shop cabinets and then tackle making my own kitchen cabinets.

The bit is sharp, worked well, and cost $20. It's not a carbide bit, which the local Woodcraft sells for $35. But I should be able to sharpen this bit a few times.

This was my first time using the SS drill press mode as well. Being able to clamp those 80" doors to the table and accurately drill eight holes to the right depth was great. Note the new chuck, my used SS didn't have one.

Not worth the price IMHO.
35 mm = 1.377 inches so use a 1 3/8 inch which is 1.375. Close enough for government work.

When I first did these hinges I got a kit with a guide to locate the hole and a bit. I haven't done any in years now but the bit that I got I don't think has ever required more the a touch up with a diamond file. Not even sure if I could find them now. Now that I'm thinking about it I think there were two templates, one for each side???

Now I'm going to have to look for them.
