Turning off mistake

Slowly making it back to slow. I don't know how far, or if it was turned with the motor off (suspected). Getting resistance.
Both belts seem to be fine and in place.

One email worked(last one?) Send the other two.

However the first revealed a problem. The button bearing attached to the end of the control sheave hub is 'missing'. Likely resting in the bottom of the motor pan.

Cause? Possibly a combination of too rapid adjustment of speed towards fast AND a sticky floating sheave on the motor pulley. Getting the floating sheave well oiled is problematic as the spring gets in the way.

Normally the loop does not pull on the bearing, but if the floating sheave is slow to react, the porkchop can pull it. The purpose of the loop is to prevent the button from rotating. The button on the bearing should also have a small tension pin(may be separated and also in the bottom of the motor pan). The hook ends of the loop fit into the ends of the pin.

Do send the other pix as there may be more to this 'story'.

I looked for the bearing in the motor pan, no luck. Hard to get hand under motor. Few metal shavings , not huge but some. Small washer (very light weight ).
Looking gloomy as far as fixing this mess.
Looks like I will be sending the head for repair.

Taking it off not necessary nor desirable at this point.

The speed control knob and porkchop gear etc. are easily removed. That allows removal of the control sheave.(it simply pulls off the end of the idler shaft).

I understand it all looks bad, but this is a machine that is quite easily restored to running. Keep the faith!!!

With JPG and a few others here, and pics from your end, there is no problem for you to fix it. These guys eat and sleep with there SS, and written most of the tutorials on the maintenance forum on how to redo/rebuild/fix it.
