Preping for the Double Tilt

The upgrade does not include the tube lock bars or associated hardware. It does include new nuts and bolts to attach the bases to the legs. The ones included in my kit changed the fasteners from slot head pan screws with washers and square nuts to Phillips head pan screws and K-lock nuts.

Thank you, I appreciate the feed back. I'll deposit the new pan head screws and lock nuts in the hardware drawer. I prefer, for nonsense reasons, to retain retain the original hardware.

Nonsense is filling the 'landfill' with perfectly usable stuff just for the sake of being 'tidy' or neat'.

Is it safe for me to assume that the relationship between the Way Tubes and the Bench Tubes is NO DIFFERENT than any other Mark 5/V?

That is to say that the Way Tubes are 8 3/4" outside dimension and that the Bench Tubes are 9 3/4" outside dimension and that the height (Way Tube to Bench Tube) is 9 3/8" outside dimension.

I will most likely be working alone on this upgrade and I plan to make some jigs to help me get the relationships between all the tubes correct.

Question for Double Tilt Owners: The Shopsmith documentation for the DT make reference to a drawing in attachment A. Is the attached a reasonable facsimile of that jig.

The directions call for the SS to be turned over onto the table and these blocks are used to support the bench tubes to keep the correct spacing from the way tubes. Since I was also doing the power pro upgrade, after pulling the headstock, I just dismantled everything for cleaning, waxing/lubing and reassembled with the new bases.

I didn't do the upgrade like shopsmith explained. I put saw horses under the tubes and pulled the legs off to clean and paint. Then pulled the tubes. I marked the tubes so I could center them and marked the tops so they didn't get rotated. Again the same when I put it back together, started reassembly with the bench tubes on the saw horses. The whole assembly was put together on the saw horses then the legs added back on. I was able to do the job myself, if I had done it as per the plan I would have had to have a second person for at least part of the work.

Thanks for the feed back. The height dimension is what I am seeking? The text refers to Attachment A but there is no attachment to look at. All I really needed was to know is if Shopsmith detailed the height of this little jig. Is the separation between Bench and Way Tubes the same as before? On my Mark V, I measure that to be 5 3/4".

The jig (Attachment A) is used during the Double Tilt upgrade to support the Bench Tubes when the machine is turned up side down and the end castings have been removed. If the new castings did not alter that relationship (between Bench and Way Tubes), the dimension is 5 3/4" as shown in my Sketch.

If I can confirm that the intended dimensions did not change, I am going to build two jigs per the attached Sketch. I will be doing my upgrade in the upright position as others have done. I won't have the required horse power available to flip it over.

If I have done this correctly, with it in place, I should be able to pull an old end casting and slide the new ones right on with no alignment issue. Since both ends are now made up of two pieces, I may get some surprises.
