OK but the key word here is "#2 Morse taper". That is the standard. Since all SS tail stock eccentrics have a thru hole what does the length or the end shape matter?

So "Number 2 Morse, is Number 2 Morse" as far as the SS is concerned.

I am sure I have missed something and look forward to hear what it is.

The minimum requirement for a MT2 'post' or 'socket' is the taper which varies from other 'MT'. The actual length becomes secondary.

Look down the chart of the tapers at the bottom. All same taper, but the diameters/length vary.

Also notice others in addition to Morse.

JPeG, since the Model 10 tailstock socket is open at
the back (small) end, and THAT socket is the only
place a #2 Morse Taper will fit, I stand by my first.

Anything, yes ANYTHING with a #2 Morse taper,
will lock into a Model 10 tailstock. Period!

Not all Morse tapers are the same. Pull up the
Wikipedia page I posted above, and they're different.

My point was that different sockets may not all be the same diameter, but will always have the same taper. Yes a socket designed for a MT2 will have a MT2 taper, but the 'fit' position along the length may vary.

Open ended makes any MT2 fit fer sure.(as long as the ODs match the socket.

Look down that wiki for other kinds of 'taper' specs.

I find the 'Jarno' quite interesting and 'regular'.

It appears to me that all of the tapers except the Jarno (not Jarnel) are actually a slightly different taper depending on the size.

Since the minor and major diameters and length of the male are different there will be a difference in how far it fits in. Maybe it will bottom out before the taper engages.

Yes the tapers MUST match, but not the ODs.

Ditto here... The taper must match otherwise, Only a small section of the taper would engage the hole. Of course, We all know what would happen with that scenario...

I bought 2 centers, a bunch of shopsmith chisels and 2 faceplates from a nice guy on craigslist. Any tips on sharpening or anything else?
