Belt Sander $199 sale..........

Post by cincinnati »

$199 I do believe is the best price I have seen for some time. Anyone care to comment on it's usefulness in the home shop.
Also there was a post not long ago on the quality of the strip sander that was sent to them. Like to hear from others that purchased one in the last few months. Were you happy? Fit and finish top notch?
I have the belt sander, Will I find each useful?
I said to myself this week I need to slow down on my woodworking spending. Now Shopsmith does this to me. LOL!!!

At the risk of losing a sale, I have to tell you in all truthfulness that the applications of a strip sander in woodworking are limited, although there are specific operations for which they are very useful, such as sanding interior cuts. However, they are absolutely essential for sharpening. Dick Belcher, the professor of woodcarving at the University of Cincinnati and a carver with some international fame, believes the Shopsmith Strip Sander in combination with the Sharpening Attacment (555812) to be about the most versatile sharpening system going. I have to agree. We use ours at the Academy continually, and it will put an edge on a chisel or gouge that you can shave with -- in just minutes.

What belt grits do you use with the sharpening attachment. Do you need to change the belts frequently to get a sharp edge?

I also noticed a great overstock sale for router acc. including $219.99 for the overhead pin router (almost $200.00 off) that lasts until Monday at midnight. Do you think this is a good buy also?

Watch the first video I cited; it answers those questions better than I can here.

Do you think this [overarm router sale] is a good buy also?

I bought the strip sander last year and am happy with it. As Nick mentioned there are limited applications but I replaced an old bench top unit with the SS mainly because of it's inside sanding capabilities. I used the old one frequently and the SS even more. I haven't used it for sharpening but the reviews have been good for this application.

Is it worth $199, only you can judge. I was fortunate to get mine for considerably less so mine was worth the price I paid even though it was more expensive than a small bench top model.

The only problem I have is that my band saw resides almost permanently on my 510 and moving it to make room for the stip sander is awkward with the fence that I have. If only I had the space, and a power station, all would be right with the (woodworking) world!

Good luck.

The price on the Overarm Router is exceptional. I can't remember any SPT
being 40% off lately. Also a good deal on the strip sander, Nick is right
about sharpening, that's what mine is used for. Who needs a Tormek?

Darn - those sales ended at midnight. I wish I had checked email this holiday weekend. Better yet I wish Shopsmith wouldn't send them during 'holidays'. Lets hope they bring this one back - like the connector tubes which they seemed to send me about 4 times in a month's time.

Give SS a call to plead your case, ie, I was away for the holiday or whatever maybe they will honor the price. I used to work for one of the two large woodworking retailers and many times they would honor sale prices a day or two after the sale for good customers. Worth a try.:)

I didn't get the email that had the OPR on sale. Fortunately, I did read this forum this weekend and went looking for the email offers on the owner's page. As a result, I was able to order the OPR. Tough decision on the money but the price looked too good. Now I need to buy a good router.

Thanks everyone who posted on this thread.

Nick,

Thanks for pointing me to the tips on both the strip sander and the OPR. They helped in my purchasing decisions.
