Protecting under surfaces

Post by moggymatt »

Somewhere I've heard once the bottom side of a cast iron or aluminum table was cleaned up, spray lacquer can be used to keep the rust or oxidation away. Has anyone here ever used that method? If so, how well did it work?

I've been using Alumaslick spray on my aluminum windows and on aluminum Shopsmith parts with great success. It's not a lacquer, but a corrosion inhibitor. I just keep it off parts that come in contact with the wood I'm working. You can get it at Lowes.

As far as lacquer, I've used clear coat sprays on aluminum rims with good results. Rust-Oleum Acrylic lacquer that I got from Autozone worked great to touch up my aluminum rims after a fast-lube joint messed up my rims.
Like any paint job, the key is good prep-work before laying the first coat of lacquer.

I have been using self etching primer on unexposed surfaces.

When I was refurbing I cleaned those surfaces well and just painted them to match the rest of that SS. It has been several years now and that paint still looks like new. It also allows instant ID of which table belongs with which SS. I sometimes migrate stuff around when it is just for support but each table and extension table is adjusted for a particular SS and to swap them around when cutting etc. they could be off quite a bit.
