Hand screws are great fo holding small parts while drilling small parts. They make a great vise for cutting small parts on a scroll saw. I have used larger hand screws to pull 4x4s into alignment while building some garden beds. Very useful everyone should have a few in their shop.

The bed in the foreground looks a bit treated, look at the back side 2nd one up, looks green to me. And if not for a commercial place lots of expense
and work to recoup in a home garden. Especially if have access to a farmers market.

I am surmising that is either a kit that came with painted lap joints or they were painted by the 'poster'.
As for color of the timber, blame the weather and the sun.
I woulda used large c clamps(or short pipe clamps) and a couple of short 2x4 because that is what I have.
Those are nice screw(Jorgensen) clamps though!
