Most Sundays I go to my daughter, Sarah's house and visit for a couple of hours. Last Sunday I took her out so she could buy an electric lawnmower, neither of them drive,
they have a good sized yard and the push mower wasn't up to the task.
When we were unloading the new mower her neighbour next door came over to say hello. He was doing wood working in his driveway so I asked to see what he was working on.

He was making a bandsaw box in the shape of an eagle feather. The box was made of Yellow Cedar and the lid had an overlay of a darker wood (like a thick veneer) that he had cut
so the grain ran diagonally and then sliced so that it was book matched so it looked like a feather. He was then going to inlay a piece of lighter wood
down the center to form the quill, it would extend past the end of the box to also act as a handle to lift lid,

It wasn't finished yet but he showed me a picture of another one he had done and it was spectacular.
Sorry I didn't get a photo.

Anyway when I went to visit this Sunday he had left some pieces of wood (walnut and maple) with her for me.

I think I will turn him a pen as a thank-you.

I was starting to get a little excited today. I thought I had gotten enough of the stuff done that "had to be done" (forget being "caught up", ever...) that I could fire up the little sawmill today and cut a couple of logs. Alas it wasn't to be. :o I did get a few acres of mowing done and split some firewood (no splitter, I just use a heavy maul for most of it) and I got a good bit of horse fence reconfigured along with some odd jobs. Not too bad for an old guy with a dicky ticker on a day of about a 90 degrees high temp but not enough time or energy for the lumber sawing.
I might get to a little of it in the morning. I have really good shade there in the morning and until about 3 O'clock.
I have a small maple log, a small cherry log and a kind of rough but fair sized mulberry log. I also have a large maple log, also kind of rough (limbs) but I probably will not get to it tomorrow. Too many other irons in the fire. I also have about 8 other smallish logs to cut if I can get to them. I have some big stuff waiting but it is still being stored on the stump.
I could probably keep the little mill quite busy for the whole month of June but I just can't give it that much time.
My son has been a big help this week end by using his 9' brush mower to mow about 40 acres of horse pastures and lanes. I do most of my mowing of the lawn areas with a 61" zero turn and I only have a few acres to do with it yet. Then next week I can start all over again. The stuff my son did with the big mower will probably be good for 2 or 3 weeks depending on how much rain we get and how fast the horses eat. :)

Been an interesting spring here, hot humid already and about any time I want to get some more garden work done it rains... which it is doing right now.

I had plans of planting the onions and putting some composted soil in one of the boxes in preparation to my plant beans in the box. Got maybe 3/4 of the onions planted then came the rain. Looking at the weather map we have another one coming before long so I think it is time to call it a day. Wouldn't mind working in a light rain but hearing thunder it is not a good idea to be out working like that.

The hot weather has been good for the tomato plants, getting good growth and nice color. Have an early variety called 4th of July, we will wait and see before planning on have our first tomatoes by then.

Peppers are growing tall, a couple have set fruit, not sure if I should let them do that yet, tall but thin, might be the new garden box with taller sides is causing this??

We are in the process of moving our compost bin. It has been interesting finding things in there as I dig it out. It has been about 10 years since I last emptied it and was thinking it would be like it was last time. Not so, the near by tree has decided it was a good place to feed so it is/was full of roots! I'm finding corn cobs that still look like corn cobs even after 10 years?? Found several other things that we didn't know what happened to them, a scoop and a spoon, metal garage can lid, planters, out let plug in..... A far number of plastic bags, I think they were dropped by the squirrels who were using them in their nest box that is in a tree over the garden box. Also a few pockets of what looks like trash, mostly shiny objects, maybe a pack rat except we don't have those here, maybe a pack chipmunk???

Guess I get to go play in the shop now. Too bad that means doing clean up and then continuing on my rearrangement efforts. I'd rather be doing a real project but you have to do what you have to do.

I did manage to get the little sawmill fired up this morning and sawed up an old smallish 8' sycamore log. I trimmed off the weathered part and the center was still good. It wasn't a big log to start with but I still got 8 decent boards out of it 4/4+ thick and 8" wide. Not sure what I will use them for, I'll just sticker them in the stacks for now. Maybe I'll get some more cut tomorrow. It's harder to stay excited when it's 90 degrees...

my dad did 32 missions over Germany in a B26 Marauder, flying the Path Finder, like in Memphis Bell, but short of pilots towards the end did not get to go home after 25, 3 shoot ups/flack emergency landings grave diggers came out the last time as he was pulling out the Co Pilot and nose gunner, tail broke off, Bombardier was in it and tail gunner, messed up but alive, rest DOA.
Best thing I heard and saw was last summer during the Oshkosh EAC convention, my house on Sroebe Island in Appleton, WI is on the flight path to the air port, so about 4 pm ish, cocktaling it on the front Veranda, in comes a B 29, of course those huge Turbo Radial engines were cut for landing, I said man, love to hear them on take off, well my lucky day, next morning on the back Veranda having coffee and surfing, it took off just over my head, at about 1000ft over me, a sound and look that was just amazing.

Here on the wall, right over my desk, is a limited-edition print of a Robert Bailey B-17 painting given to me by my father-in-law. My FIL was an official "Lucky Bastard", having survived 30+ missions over enemy territory as a B-17 belly-turret gunner. (Average life expectancy was maybe a dozen missions for that job, and only seven for the tail gunner). Signed by my FIL, several of his fellow crew members, and Rosie Rosenthal, a highly decorated group leader.

My wife doesn't truly appreciate it.

But I do.
