Band Saw Blade Hanging @ JPG

JPG, in a previous thread/post you made a comment about hanging a Band Saw Blade by just one hook/nail is wrong, it should be on 2 about the same distance or a bit less then the diam of the wheels that it goes on, or folded it back up again like when purhased.
Okay, my question that just came to me is, why hanging it by just one point is any worse for it then folding it up into a 10" diameter package?

I have yet to re-coil any of my shopsmith blades due to what I had read. I do re-coil my other saw's blades. I have not yet made a storage box for them so I have yet to face doing a design for it.

Thanks Reible, I got out of it and I think what JPG posted was on a smaller blade, hanging makes it round instead of its normal shape Oval, with a longer blade, on one suspension point it will hang more oval. Just a thought, dont know if it makes any difference, as long as on the saw the tension is relieved, and I think that is more for the saw frame and tires then the blade.

Reible now you got me think what JPG meant after rereading and looking at yours Folded and on 2 pegs. I was thinking he meant 2 pegs instead of one when Not folded. I do not fold mine after opening the first time.

Hanging on a single 'post' places the stress of the entire weight at a small area around the post.

Adding a second essentially reduces that by 1/2.

The 'natural shape' is round. The weight causes it to acquire an oval shape.

Hanging on a single post when coiled reduces the stress even more, but the stress of coiling can be an added problem.

I coil em to store em.

I agree with all you said, but when on the saw it is in an oval shape, so why not hung on a single peg? Also why is the hanging weight of matter,significance?
I think I see what you are talking about the hanging oval but will wait on your explanation.

OK, hang it on a peg with a 10" diameter.

What else is there to explain? Gravity causes the circle to droop(both 1 or 2 pegs - less with the two).

A bad day at the Casino?
I was thinking it is in an oval when mounted on a saw, and along one might droop a bit on one peg and get a set in it, I thought that may have been your answwer. I am looking at the 72" I took off the SS BS that I bought about 6 weeks ago, it is on one peg hand by eyeball is hanging round. My 14" Delata with a 6" riser do hang a bit oval. Also arnt they made out of basically spring steel? I am not trying to be argumentative .

I think this is much hand wringing over nothing. Everything that has been said is probably correct in theory. However, in every day practice I think none of it makes any difference. JMHO.

I store all my BS blades coiled both SS and non-SS. After all that is the way you buy them. FWIW, I have never had a BS blade break. The 105" blades for the Powermatic hang on the hook on the side of the saw. The SS blades are stored flat in a storage unit that I made.

Does anyone have any definitive data on BS blade storage and longevity? I would think if there is any real problem the blade manufacturers would let us know.
