Junk Mail

Post by dusty »

I get a lot of junk mail. A lot of it comes from India. Is there a way to eliminate junk from getting through.

Are there 'unsubscribe' links embedded?

I would only do that with repeat offenders otherwise you may be responding to a phish.

I always taught our customers to NEVER respond to a SPAM mail. When you do the server acknowledges your existence because you responded and then "sells" your email to other SPAMMERS. It is a vicious circle and no easy way to eliminate it. The easiest way is to create a new email address (and yes I know the problems with that ... :D )

Dusty, who is your mail provider and what level do you have the security level set at? They should be filtering already depending on the security level you set.

There should be a way to set your email reader to filter spam. Windows Live Hotmail Tips, Tricks and Secrets
Using an email reader on your computer should give you more options for filtering than reading your mail online in your browser.
I use Thunderbird to read my email and it flags incoming mail that it thinks might be spam.

I never did get much in the way of spam and since we changed providers a couple of years ago, (my old account was hosted by the provider), and I had to get a new email account (Gmail this time) it has dropped to almost zero. So Rjent's suggestion might be the best. Why not see if dustywoodworker@gmail.com is available, that would help ease the transition.

Dusty, for the SS Forum JPG suggested Fire Fox, about 4 years ago, I have been totally happy with them for my Browser, but I use GMail for email at least 5 years and not had your problems, if your not sure, dont open it!!!!

I have a "junk mail" email address I use. I use my real email address with folks I actually want to here from. That helps some.

I use Thunderbird, was getting 100s of spam a day, went in and re-figured the spam filter and now get 1 or 2.

Gmail does a really good job filtering spam. Be sure to check your spam folder from time to time though, non-spam is occasionally caught in the net too.
