There is always the Snow Bird option. You might talk a bit with shipwright another Platinum Member here who lives in Vancouver Island, Canada (summer) and Green Valley Az. (Winter.

There's Florida and folks like Bill Mayo and his wife Ann who can tell you much about that area as well.

Sometimes I wish I had a mountain retreat to get away from the summer heat and I know our daughter in Colorado would welcome us to the area.

Colorado might be an option as you can have cold and some seasonal changes, and besides, your Shopsmith gear doesn't rust there apparently. I have never bought a rusty one out of Colorado, period.

Thanks all, heat pump for heat and AC JPG yes a propane heater, which I would not use, back up, A wood fuel stove, did a CL can get a full cord of wood on CL in the area for about $200, mixed Locust and Oak, with a good wood burner, or a pellet stove. For heat and austhenics in the main room, heat pump set at min and my electric mattress pad and Down Comforter the bed room chilled, which I sleep that way anyway for years. I like the house at room temp about 66* in the main rooms I think it is do able and not too costly.
I am not worried about heating cost or cooling cost.
Average Jul/Aug high temp is 80ish, average Jan/Feb low is 20 ish, but more rain then WI

Looks like it has problems with the foundation and (lack of) waterproofing or drainage.

I saw the H2O stains that planeguy referred to. There is a door just to the left of the stain and it may be that the door was improperly installed or the frame is rotted. Hard to tell. But corners in any foundation are a problem.

Thanks all, basement door to the exterior is in a stair well, so a back up of rain/snow in it that can seep in. Seal situation and doors arnt made to hold back water above there sills. Minor problem to resolve if I go with it.
The mom thing is current, and first priority, many more of these after that is resolved/terminated. I would not buy something to sit vacant.

Caution! Moving anywhere can open a whole can of worms very few people think about. First as we get older we must rely on close friends more and more. Moving often breaks those relationships.
Moving to a warmer climate appeals to many but there are things warmer weather includes that most people don't think about. Insects, critters, sun damage ( to buildings, cars, and most importantly skin). My wife has been told by her dermatologist that if she exposes her skin to the sun without protection she is absolutely crazy. He said her best bet would be to move north.

What you save on heating you usually spend on cooling. Also there are more and longer lasting storms. Lived in Pa. and Ohio for 33 years never went without power for longer than a few hours. Here in Florida week long power outages are not uncommon during storms.

Roof don,t last as long. Where I live in Florida no company will write a NEW insurance policy on a house with a roof old than 15 years. Most insurance companies can force you to reroof if the roof is over 20 years old under the threat of cancelation.

Then there are things I never heard of up north like sink holes. They sell sink hole insurance which isn't,t cheap. Then there is hurricane insurance, which covers any damage that occurs during a NAMED storm. In other words there is hurricane named Ralph in the state near you and a freak gust of wind blows down a tree that falls on your house the insurance company only repairs it according to the provisions of your hurricane insurance not your normal home insurance. Which is very expensive.

Living out isolated is great until you need a doctor/hospital. Also is there any relief services like meals on wheels should you be unable to cook for your self for a few months? Having a well is great provided you have saved about $1000 for emergency repairs. Septic tanks are great but many locales are now mandating tanks must be pumped yearly at the cost of hundreds of dollars. My tank gets pumped yearly now to prevent drain field damage which costs thousands to repair. Plus if the county decides your soil doesn't perk you have to put in a raise drain field with a pump which requires maintence.

Moving is like the old saying in the service which is the best base is the one you came from or the one you are going to. Having moved fairly frequently I am convinced no one should move unless they are relocated by work. To move for better living is merely trading known problems for unknown ones.

As you get older move toward the best medical care, the best infrastructure, with the best care services. Unless you are a hermit look for social services that allow you to do things with other people. Check police and fire protection, emergency services.

Lastly look for things like churches, libraries, shopping, pharmacy, restaurants. These all become more important as we get older.

Lastly what are your plans should you lose you drivers license and self driving cars aren't perfected?

As a pastor I get to see tons of people that never considered any of these things and now live in misery being adversely effected by thing such as these.
