Table System on Model 510

Post by lalkie »

I have the 510 table system and was adjusting the tables and squaring the tables to the blade. I noticed the floating table is .094 lower than the main table and the end table. Is this normal? I tried loosening the tubes on the floating table thinking they would be mounted in with slots to allow some adjustment. I know .094 is not much but it affects the support when cutting longer boards. Thanks Larry

I contribute this to the flaw in 510 design. Thankfully Shopsmith corrected the problem with the 520. You are right .094 is not much when used solely for support, but if it bothers you consider the 520 upgrade.

You can minimize this if you lift up on the floating table as you tighten the fence rail screws that lock the connector tubes in place. I had to lift up on the table as I tightened the main and floating table fence screws.

Others disagree but I did measurements and proved to myself the problem was the design of how the connecting tubes were held in the fence rails. Evidently this was also proven to SS as they radically changed the whole design in the 520.

I don't totally disagree with Ed but I do not believe there are any design "flaws". Yes, there was room for improvement and maybe those improvements have all been incorporated in the 520 design (but maybe not).

As for floating table alignment on a 510, what you describe can be corrected. Follow the procedures in the manual very closely and critically and you get get the floating table to align against the main table almost perfectly. Probably perfectly if you stick with it.

If you need the extension table to be movable from the left end to the right end or vice verse, you will have to do a much more tedious alignment. To achieve this, the main table must not only be square to the blade (in both planes), it must also be near perfectly flat and then level (table tilt at absolute 0°). Your way tubes must also be in the same horizontal plane.

Before you set out to achieve this, search way down deep to determine if you are ready for this challenge. It won't come easy and it won't come quickly but if you need for the extension tables to be interchangeable, it can be done. Once done, I am not certain that it is all worth the time and effort. You decide.

Do check to make sure you don't have bent extension tubes and that your table is not warped.

To check for a warped table, lay it upside down on a known flat surface (your expensive dining room table would work) and pressure on each of the corners (independently). If the table is warped, you'll know it.
