Reassemble a Shopsmith 10er

I inherited an old Shopsmith 10er a few years ago. It was in rough shape when I got it. I read through a few threads in this forum and other places online and used them for a guide to disassembling, cleaning, rust removal, polishing, painting, etc. I also took a ton of pictures as I pulled it apart. Since then, I ruined my phone (which had all the pictures stored) and I am not able to find a good guide for reassembling this tool. One of the main ones I used was this:

Most of the pictures in this thread are no longer active. From what I remember, this was a very well done restoration. I was hoping that someone had a version of this thread (or any) that might help with putting this back together. Thanks.

I didn't look at all the pages but from what I could see the pictures are not missing. When the new software was implemented here on the forum the old posts ended up with the pictures all at the bottom of the posts rather then within the text. Please have another look.

Thanks! I do see some, but there still appear to be a lot missing. I didn't even consider it before you said this, but I'm pulling this up on a iPhone, so it could be some sort of formatting problem. I'll try to pull it up on my PC later today.

I still can't believe I lost all those pictures I took during the tear down. Also can't believe it's taken me years to begin putting it back together. Oh well.

Earlier this year I restored both the 10E and 10ER manuals and you will find both have redrawn illustrated parts listings. I have reoriented the exploded lines paths with colored lines to show how parts assembly should appear.

In each there is an oversize drawing without part numbers cluttering up the image detail. Some find those really helpful.

I somehow never saw this reply. Thanks for the link to all the manuals! Those are great! I got a little discouraged trying to get this back together last fall. I'm steadily working on it again with that hopes that I can get it up and running again. I'll post pictures once I get it back together or if I'm having trouble. It's the headstock that I'm worried about, everything else seems straight forward.

Quick couple questions:

First, I think I screwed up. This is the pulley assembly from a speed changer. The fixed sheaves have been removed because the floating sheave is frozen. I'm assuming that the sheave moves where the arrow is pointing, but wasn't 100% sure. I initially began soaking it in PB blaster but then found a manual that said to soak it in paint thinner or a solvent... Then I read to "NEVER loosen the special size set screws". Oops. How bad is this?

Second, what is this little part on the right?

I appreciate any info you guys have on this.

It is not bad at all. In the speed changer manual under "Care of your Speed Changer" it does say never loosen those screws. On the last page of the manual under "Trouble Shooting the Speed changer" it says if the distance between the outer sheaves is greater than 2" loosen those screws and set the sheaves to 2".

When I refurbish a speed changer I always completely disassemble it and then set the sheaves to 2" when I reassemble it.


As for the item on the right I don't know. It looks like the carriage stop rod except I have never seen one with a dimple in it. All the ones I have seen have a screwdriver slot in the non threaded end.
