You gotta realize that engineering fashions have changed since the days of Apollo 13 (as beautifully recreated by Tom Hanks).

Who needs a pen or pencil anymore? Most meetings are held in a conference room with a keyboard and projector, or else around someone's PC. Info is zapped around electronically. Truth be told, I sometimes do still take handwritten notes. But those rarely get properly organized, and are not computer-searchable, so I generally avoid them. Anything handwritten that actually has any long-term value gets photographed by the modern engineer's portable toolkit (see photo below), where it is automatically pushed to the "cloud" and later organized.

And being a bit more hands-on than many modern engineers, I also tote the portable multifunction tool shown below, in my laptop case. Who needs a toolbox?

Not that I am complaining, on my thread, because I sure can turn ones direction, but this has gone 270*
You forgot the 6" "General" ruler with the clip on it, front side scale, 32nds and 64ths, back side Fractions to Decimal equivalents to 64ths.

I was referring to the pocket protector era.

I used pocket protectors when I worked in an auto parts warehouse back in the '70's. When I would bend over to pick something up a pen would fall out, and when I reached down to pick up that pen all the rest would go too followed by the pocket protector.
Then I got one of these,

and no more problems the clip held the pens in the protector and the protector in the pocket.
